Venus and Adonis / Savitri

  • The Flea Theater 20 Thomas St. New York, NY 10007 USA (map)

New Camerata Opera presents a double-bill of Venus and Adonis and Savitri: two works that feature strong women at the heart of their stories.

John Blow's Venus and Adonis was originally a masque for the entertainment of King Charles II. The work was the first to have been written by a female librettist, Anne Finch, and tells the tale of Venus and the demise of her lover, Adonis. Barbara will sing the role of Venus.

Based on an episode in the Mahabharata, Gustav Holst's Savitri was innovative in its day and still mesmerizes. This production will honor the Indian culture which gave us this story and feature singers of South Asian heritage.

Directed by Jennifer Williams, with Music Direction by Stephan Fillare

Performances are 11/29 and 12/1 at 7:30pm, 12/2 at 2:00pm. Click here to purchase tickets.
